Educational Software

Purchasing Educational Software
From time to time you may want or need to purchase some educational software. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Define your instructional goals, objectives, and strategies
  • Decide what kinds of software you need
  • Buy tool or application programs first
  • Get recommendations from professional journals and other teachers
  • Match hardware and software specifications
  • Evaluate software personally
  • Test software with students

Some teachers believe that they need to get "content" software for each subject, theme, or unit. This is too expensive and wastes limited resources. Tool or application software (things like word processors, databases, and multimedia programs like HyperStudio, etc.) fit into any subject or unit year after year. They are only limited by your own creativity. There are many books and online resources that can help you figure out how to use them as a tools for learning.
There are many places where you can get good software but probably your local computer store will have only limited programs. Here are some companies (among many) that feature educational software for education prices. These are just a few places to start looking...and, no, I do not get any commission from them! I'm only trying to help those of you who may be wondering where to find good educational programs.

Talk to teachers who are doing great things in their classrooms to get their recommendations and then shop around for the best prices. The first three resources have been helpful to many.
